Just unearthed this cartoon from the Daily Telegraph, the day after the report of our victory in a historic court battle with London Underground, and the award of 20 pence damages to us. Happy days, when we thought we would get decriminalisation without one of these ‘orrible licensing schemes!

IT’S STILL A CRIME TO PLAY MUSIC IN THE STREETS

To mark Camden Council’s intention to introduce their very own buskers’ licensing scheme – including a general ban on the use of drums and wind instruments, and powers for the police to CONFISCATE instruments from musicians found busking without the licence – we’ve posted our song “IT’S A CRIME TO PLAY MUSIC IN THE STREETS” on YouTube.

The black and white still-image which appears in the video, of a younger Bongo Mike and Extremely Frank Jeremy, playing in the street along with flute-player David Benn, depicts the exact spot in Coventry Street, in London’s West End, where the song was inspired (if that’s the word for it), and first performed.

The song was an answer to the treatment we received when we were first busking in London, but the video was mostly filmed in Leuven, Belgium, where we later played for many years without official hindrance.

For more details about our involvement with buskers rights, follow the link to Busk Action at top of this page.
